Being Sane in Insane Places

*Note-my husband wrote this while we were in Cabo post-meeting and while searching for 4 trees that had mysteriously disappeared from our terrace since our last Cabo visit. Ginny Horning

A psychology professor at Stanford University, David Rosenhan, conducted a very interesting experiment whereby he and some of his students and colleagues faked symptoms of various mental disorders in order to be admitted to a mental hospital.

Once admitted they once again behaved normally as they did in life before the admission! Rosehan’s study showed that once the initial diagnosis is made, regardless of the normal behavior afterwards, one is always treated on the basis of the initial diagnosis.

Our problem is that the Villa Group initially diagnosed us as time share owners who held a (50 year)renewable lease instead of a (25 year) non-renewable lease. In the initial stages many of us owners behaved as diagnosed.

It does not matter to the Developers that we are now behaving like home owners with rights of home owners. For they (like the mental health workers in Rosenhan’s study) will continue to treat us on the basis of their initial diagnosis.

As we are now, in order to obtain our rights, preparing for a lawsuit we are asking members for money to cover the cost of such preparation.

In any movement there will always be members who do not move or shake; some who move and some who shake and a few who become the movers and shakers. We can not change this; we only can hope that we collectively move enough to create a sane place for ourselves.

If we were, at this moment, in a sane place, we could assess members equally for the expenses for such preparation, but for now we must ask our members to do what they will strictly on a voluntary basis. However, we must remember the Rosenhan study and not create a lasting diagnosis of any of our members because of the degree of their movement.
